Overview

  • Private tour: only you and your own group, with your own guide and vehicle
  • Kayasehir, the largest rock-carved settlement in the world, found by accident in 2014
  • Agzikarahan Caravanserai, a Seljuk stone inn on the old Silk Road
  • Salt Lake, the second largest lake in Turkey, with two hours of free time on the salt flats
  • Traditional lunch with a soft drink and all entrance tickets included
  • Hotel pick-up and drop-off in Cappadocia
  • Starts at 09:00 and ends around 19:00

This tour heads west out of Cappadocia, away from the valleys, to three places that most visitors never reach. The first is Kayasehir, under the hill of Nevsehir Castle, where urban renewal work in 2014 broke into a rock-carved settlement that turned out to be the largest in the world, with a painted church, connecting tunnels and close to a thousand cave rooms. The second is Agzikarahan, a Seljuk caravanserai built in 1231, one of the stone inns that sheltered merchants a day's march apart along the Silk Road. The last is Salt Lake, a shallow sheet of water covering 1,600 square kilometres, which dries into a hard white crust in summer that you can walk out onto.

Good to know before you book

  • Salt Lake sometimes turns pink, usually between May and September, when the heat concentrates the water and the algae in it multiply. It depends on the weather and the water level, so it cannot be promised for any particular day.
  • Flamingos breed on the lake and are often seen between spring and late summer, but they move around a large area and are not there every day.
  • There is no shade at the lake and the salt reflects the sun. Bring sunglasses, a hat and water, and shoes you do not mind getting salty.
  • The lake looks different through the year: full of water and mirror-like in spring, dried into a hard white crust from June to September, when it is also most likely to turn pink. Kayasehir and the caravanserai are the same in any season.

Itinerary

Your guide picks you up from your hotel at 09:00 and the first stop is Kayasehir, under the hill of Nevsehir Castle. Urban renewal work here in 2014 broke into a rock-carved settlement that turned out to be the largest in the world, with a church painted with frescoes, tunnels connecting one level to the next, and close to a thousand cave rooms. Excavation is still going on.
Kayasehir Rock-Carved Settlement
The road west follows part of the old Silk Road, and Agzikarahan is one of the stone inns built along it, finished in 1231 under the Seljuks. Merchants stayed here free for three days, with their animals stabled and their goods guarded, before moving on to the next inn a day's march away.
Agzikarahan Caravanserai
A traditional lunch with a soft drink, at a local restaurant on the way to the lake.
Lunch
Turkey's second largest lake, covering 1,600 square kilometres but only a metre or two deep, which is why it dries into a white crust each summer. You have about two hours of free time to walk out onto the salt and take photographs. In the hotter months the water sometimes turns pink, and flamingos feed and breed here through spring and summer. The tour ends around 19:00 and your guide drops you back at your hotel.
