It is the question we are asked most often, usually before anything else: how long should I stay in Cappadocia? The honest answer depends on two things, what you want to see and how much the balloon flight matters to you. Here is how the options compare, from a single day to three.

The short answer

For most people, two nights is right. One night is enough to see the main sights, but it gives you only one morning for the balloon, and the balloons do not fly every day. A single day trip works if you are short of time and the balloon is not a priority.

One day: a day trip from Istanbul

It is possible to see Cappadocia in a day from Istanbul. On our private day trip by plane, you take the first flight of the morning, tour the highlights of the region with your own guide, including the Goreme Open Air Museum, Kaymakli Underground City and the fairy chimneys, and fly back to Istanbul in the evening.

What you miss is the balloon. The balloons go up at sunrise, before the first flight from Istanbul lands, so a day trip cannot include one. It is also a long day: pick-up is around 04:00 and you are back at your hotel around 23:00. Choose this if you have only one free day and want to see Cappadocia rather than skip it.

One night: two days with one balloon morning

With one night, you see both the north and the south of the region and get one chance at the balloon. There are two ways to do it.

Our 2 day small group tour, also available as a private tour, starts with the first morning flight. You tour the north of Cappadocia on the first day, sleep in a cave hotel, fly in the balloon at sunrise if you have booked it, and tour the south on the second day before flying back to Istanbul in the evening.

If you would rather avoid the 04:00 start, our 1 night private tour flies out in the afternoon. You arrive in the evening, take the balloon the next morning and fit the highlights into one full day of touring.

The limit of one night is the weather. The civil aviation authority decides each morning whether the balloons can fly, and if your one morning is cancelled, there is no second chance on the same trip. You receive a full refund for the balloon ticket, but you leave without the flight.

Two nights: the same tours, two balloon mornings

Our 3 day small group tour and the 3 day private tour cover the same sights as the 2 day version: the north of Cappadocia on one day and the south on the other. There are two differences. You fly out in the afternoon of the first day, so there is no early morning start from Istanbul. And you spend two nights in Cappadocia, which gives you two mornings for the balloon.

If the balloon is the reason you are coming, this is the option we recommend. Book the flight for the first morning. If it is cancelled for weather, you can try again the next day.

How the season changes the answer

Between December and March, balloon flights are cancelled more often because of wind, snow and fog, and the days are short. If you are travelling in winter and want to fly, two nights is worth much more than one. From April to October the weather is more reliable, and one night is usually enough if you are willing to take the chance.

Which one is right for you?

  • One free day, no balloon needed: the private day trip by plane.
  • Two days, happy with one balloon chance: the 2 day tour, or the 1 night private tour if you want to avoid the early start.
  • The balloon matters most, or you are travelling in winter: the 3 day tour, with two nights and two balloon mornings.
  • More time to spare: stay longer and add a valley hike, a sunset camel ride or a whirling dervish ceremony. Tell us how many days you have and we will suggest a plan.
