Camels carried the trade through Cappadocia for centuries, which is why there are caravanserais every thirty kilometres along these roads. The animals are still here, and riding one through the valleys at the end of the day is the closest thing to how the Silk Road actually moved. You set off from the ranch near Ortahisar as the light starts to go, swaying along the trails between the rock formations, with the handlers walking alongside. The pace is slow, which is the point: you have time to look at the valleys rather than concentrate on riding.

What to expect
- The ride lasts 90 minutes. With the transfers and the briefing, allow about 2.5 hours in total.
- This is a group activity rather than a private ride. You go out with other guests, each on your own camel.
- Pick-up and drop-off are free from Goreme, Uchisar, Urgup, Ortahisar, Cavusin and Ibrahimpasa. From other villages there may be a small transfer charge.
- The start time changes through the year, as the ride is timed around sunset. We confirm it with you the day before.
- The camels are led by handlers on foot, so no riding experience is needed.
Good to know before you book
- Two adults can ride one camel, as long as the combined weight stays under 140 kg.
- Children can ride with a parent on the same camel. Tell us their ages when you book.
- Wear long trousers and closed shoes. Bring sunglasses and sun cream, and a jacket in the colder months, as it cools quickly once the sun drops.
- The ride does not run in heavy rain or snow. If we cancel for weather you receive a full refund or can move to another day.
Cancellation Policy
To receive a full refund, you can cancel up to 24 hours before the ride, in local time. Cancellations made after that are non-refundable. If we cancel because of weather, you receive a full refund or can move to another day.

Itinerary
We collect you from your hotel about 30 minutes before the ride starts and drive you to the camel ranch at Kizilvadi, near Ortahisar. The start time moves through the year, as the ride is timed around sunset, and we confirm it with you the day before.
At the ranch you are matched with a camel and given a short briefing: how to sit, how to hold on as the camel stands and kneels, which is the part most people are not expecting. The handlers lead the camels on foot throughout, so there is nothing to steer and no experience needed.
Ninety minutes along the trails, through Rose Valley, Guldere, Zindanonu and Meskendir. The pace is a walk and the saddle sits high, so you look out over the rock formations rather than up at them. Your handler stops along the way at the best points for photographs, with the light going orange across the valleys.
Back at the ranch you dismount and we drive you to your hotel.
