Ephesus was one of the great cities of the Roman world, with a quarter of a million people living in it, and enough of it is still standing that you can walk its marble streets end to end. The Library of Celsus still rises two storeys from the square, the theatre that held 25,000 people is cut into the hillside, and the road between them is the one that Roman traders and early Christians used. Above the ruins, on Bulbul Mountain, is the small stone house where the Virgin Mary is believed to have spent her last years, a place of pilgrimage recognised by the Vatican. The day also takes in St. John Basilica, built over the apostle's tomb, the Seljuk-era Isa Bey Mosque, and the single standing column that is all that remains of the Temple of Artemis, once one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

Good to know before you book

• The Terrace Houses inside Ephesus have a separate ticket, which is not included. If you would like to see them, you can buy it at the entrance on the day and your guide will take you in.
• Ephesus is walked end to end on marble and stone paving, mostly downhill. Comfortable shoes are enough, and there is little shade in summer.
• Of the Temple of Artemis, one reconstructed column remains standing. It is a short stop on the way rather than a site to explore.

To receive a full refund, you can cancel up to 24 hours before the tour start date, in local time. Cancellations made after that are non-refundable. For this purpose the tour start time is taken as 09:00.
