Overview

  • Private tour: only you and your own group, with your own guide
  • Three routes to choose from, between 8 and 11 km, each a full day
  • Walk the valleys at ground level, through the rock churches, orchards and dovecotes
  • Traditional lunch with a soft drink in a village along the way
  • Hotel pick-up and drop-off in Cappadocia
  • Starts at 09:00 and ends in the late afternoon

Most of Cappadocia is seen from viewpoints and car parks. The valleys themselves are quieter, and walking them is the only way to see the rock-cut churches, the dovecotes carved into the cliffs and the orchards that villagers still work. We have three routes, each a full day with lunch in a village along the way, and you choose which one when you book. Your guide walks with you the whole way and the vehicle meets you at the other end, so you never have to double back.

What to expect

  • This is a private tour. Only you and your own group take part, with your own guide.
  • You choose one of the three routes when you book. Each route is a full day.
  • Lunch with a soft drink is included, in a village on the route.
  • Hotel pick-up and drop-off are included, and the vehicle meets you at the end of the walk.
  • All entrance tickets on the route are included.
  • The tour starts at 09:00 and you are back at your hotel in the late afternoon.
  • If you would like a Spanish or Portuguese speaking guide, please select this option when booking.

Good to know before you book

  • The walking is on dirt paths and dry streambeds, with some uneven ground and a few short climbs. No climbing experience is needed, but you should be comfortable walking 8 to 11 km over a day.
  • Spring and autumn are the best seasons. The valleys have almost no shade, so in July and August we start earlier to avoid the afternoon heat.
  • Bring walking shoes or trainers with grip, a hat, sun cream and at least two litres of water. Your guide carries a first aid kit.
  • After rain the valley floors can be muddy and some streambed sections slippery. Your guide may change the route on the day if conditions are poor.

Itinerary

Love Valley and Pigeon Valley, 8 km
Your guide picks you up from your hotel at 09:00. You start in Love Valley, 4 km through the tall pillar-shaped rock formations the valley is known for, then stop for lunch in the town of Uchisar. In the afternoon you walk 4 km down Pigeon Valley to Goreme, past the dovecotes carved into the cliffs that villagers once used to collect fertiliser for their vineyards. This is the gentlest of the three routes.
Red Valley to the Monks Valley, 8 km
Your guide picks you up from your hotel at 09:00. You start in the Red Valley and walk 6 km through it, with rock-cut churches along the way and the colours of the volcanic layers in the cliffs on either side. Lunch is in the village of Cavusin. Afterwards you walk 2 km more to Pasabag, the Monks Valley, where the fairy chimneys are the largest in the region. This route has the best colours and some uneven ground underfoot.
Sinasos, Gomeda and Ortahisar, 11 km
Your guide picks you up from your hotel at 09:00. You begin in Mustafapasa, the old Greek village of Sinasos, with its carved stone mansions, then walk down into the Gomeda Valley and on through Uzengi, passing the Sarica Church, cut into the rock and painted inside. The walk ends at the village of Ortahisar, where you stop for lunch. About five hours of walking, the longest of the three routes.

FAQs

Do you offer hotel pick up and drop off?
Yes, both are included. The vehicle meets you at the end of the walk, so you do not have to walk back to where you started.
What is the pick up time ?
At 09:00, from your hotel. In July and August we usually start earlier, to walk before the heat.
Are museum entrance fees included in the price?
Yes, entrance fees for all museums specified in the tour program are included in the price
I will have a balloon flight in the morning on the same day, can I still join this tour ?
Yes, day tour start times are arranged according to balloon flight times.
How difficult are the walks?
They are walks, not climbs. The ground is dirt paths and dry streambeds, with some uneven footing and a few short ascents. If you are comfortable walking 8 to 11 km over a day, you will be fine. Route 1 is the gentlest, Route 3 the longest.
Which route should I choose?
Route 1 for the easiest walk and the best-known valleys, Route 2 for the colours of the Red Valley and the largest fairy chimneys, Route 3 if you want the longest day and the quietest ground, with an old Greek village and a painted rock church. Tell us which you would like when you book, and your guide can advise if you are not sure.
When is the best time of year?
Spring and autumn. The valleys have almost no shade, so July and August are hot and we start earlier. Winter walking is possible and often beautiful after snow, but the paths can be muddy.
What should I bring?
Walking shoes or trainers with grip, a hat, sun cream and at least two litres of water. Layers are useful, as mornings are cool and afternoons warm.
