Gobeklitepe changed what archaeologists thought they knew about early humans. The stone circles here were raised around 11,000 years ago, thousands of years before writing, the wheel or farming, and nobody has fully explained why. Since then a second site has opened nearby: Karahantepe, where the pillars are carved directly out of the bedrock and the human figures are stranger still. Together they are part of what Turkish archaeologists call Tas Tepeler, the stone hills. This tour takes you there from Cappadocia, overland across the Anatolian plateau with a lunch stop in Kahramanmaras. You spend the first afternoon in Sanliurfa itself, at Abraham's Cave, the carp pool and the archaeology museum that holds the finds from both sites, so that the next day you know what you are looking at. The second day is Gobeklitepe, Karahantepe and the mud-brick houses of Harran, before your evening flight to Istanbul.

Good to know before you book

• The first day is a long drive. Cappadocia to Sanliurfa takes around 8 hours by road, with a lunch stop in Kahramanmaras, known across Turkey for its ice cream. You arrive in Sanliurfa in the afternoon and start the tour there.
• The tour ends in Istanbul, not back in Cappadocia. You fly from Sanliurfa to Istanbul on the second evening and are taken to your Istanbul hotel, usually around 23:00. Please plan your onward travel from Istanbul.
• Karahantepe is reached by a steep walk up a limestone ridge, with little shade. In summer your guide may reorder the day to visit it earlier, while it is cooler.
• This tour does not include assistant services at airports. The driver drops you at the terminal entrance, and you proceed to your gate after checking in your luggage.

Cancellation Policy

You can cancel up to 7 days before the tour start date and receive a full refund. If you cancel less than 7 days before the start date, the deposit is not refunded, as your domestic flight tickets are issued in your name and cannot be refunded. Any amount you have paid above the deposit is returned to you.
