This is the long way across Turkey, from the mosques and palaces of Istanbul to the far south-east, and it takes in three things most visitors never see. You start with two days in Istanbul, then fly to Cappadocia for the valleys, the cave churches and the underground cities. From there you travel overland to Mount Nemrut, where a Commagene king built his own funerary sanctuary on a summit at 2,150 metres and ringed it with colossal stone gods, whose heads now lie fallen at their feet. You arrive for sunset, when the light turns the mountain red. The last two days are Sanliurfa, the city of Abraham, with its carp pool and its bazaar, and the stone circles of Gobeklitepe and Karahantepe, raised around 11,000 years ago, thousands of years before writing or farming.

Good to know before you book

  • The tour runs from April to November only. Mount Nemrut is closed to visitors in winter because of snow, and the summit road is impassable. Our other south-eastern tours run all year.
  • Mount Nemrut is visited for sunset, so you come down the mountain after dark. The summit is at 2,150 metres and the last stretch is a short uphill walk on a stone path. It is cold and windy there even in summer, so bring a jacket.
  • The flight from Istanbul to Cappadocia is an evening flight, on the third day, after your Bosphorus cruise.
  • Cappadocia to Adiyaman is a long driving day, broken with a lunch stop in Kahramanmaras, known across Turkey for its stretchy ice cream.
  • The balloon flight is not included, but we can arrange it as an optional extra. It takes place at sunrise, before the day's programme begins. As you spend three nights in Cappadocia, you have three mornings to fly, and if none of them fly you receive a full refund.
  • This tour does not include assistant services at airports. The driver drops you at the terminal entrance, and you proceed to your gate after checking in your luggage.
  • The tour ends in Istanbul. You fly from Sanliurfa on the eighth evening and are back at your Istanbul hotel around 23:00.
