This is the south-east of Turkey, the part most visitors never reach, taken at a pace that makes it possible in four days. You leave Cappadocia by road and cross the plateau to Adiyaman, then climb Mount Nemrut, where a Commagene king built his own funerary sanctuary on a summit at 2,150 metres and ringed it with colossal stone gods, whose heads now lie fallen at their feet. You arrive for sunset, when the light turns the mountain red. From there you continue to Sanliurfa, the city of Abraham, with its carp pool, its bazaar and one of the best archaeology museums in the country, and to Gobeklitepe and Karahantepe, where stone circles were raised around 11,000 years ago, thousands of years before writing or farming. The tour ends in Gaziantep, a city with the best food in Turkey and the Roman mosaics of Zeugma in its museum.

Good to know before you book

  • The tour runs from April to November only. Mount Nemrut is closed to visitors in winter because of snow, and the summit road is impassable. Our other south-eastern tours run all year.
  • Mount Nemrut is visited for sunset, so you come down the mountain after dark. The summit is at 2,150 metres and the last stretch is a short uphill walk on a stone path. It is cold and windy there even in summer, so bring a jacket.
  • The first day is a long drive. Cappadocia to Adiyaman takes most of the day, with a lunch stop in Kahramanmaras, known across Turkey for its stretchy ice cream.
  • Karahantepe is reached by a steep walk up a limestone ridge, with little shade. In summer your guide may reorder the day to visit it earlier, while it is cooler.
  • The tour starts in Cappadocia and ends in Istanbul. You fly from Gaziantep on the fourth evening and are back at your Istanbul hotel around 23:00. Please plan your onward travel from Istanbul.
