Laodicea was one of the richest cities in Asia Minor, sitting where two trade roads crossed, with a stadium 285 metres long, two theatres, a council house and water brought in from the hills through stone pipes. It is also one of the seven churches addressed in the Book of Revelation, the one told it was neither hot nor cold, a line that makes more sense standing there: the hot springs of Hierapolis are visible on one side and the cold streams of Colossae on the other, and the water that reached Laodicea arrived lukewarm. In the afternoon you move on to Pamukkale itself, where the same springs have built white terraces down the hillside, with the Roman city of Hierapolis on top of them.
